The HIKER Group – Informatics and Knowledge Engineering Research for a Connected Sensing Worldknowledge-engineering-01

The HIKER Group is a computing research group that is based at Massey University (MU) and the University of Montana (UMontana).  The group undertakes research and development projects in the domains of Informatics, Knowledge Engineering, Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, Computer Security and Privacy. Research work within the HIKER Group at Massey spans all these domains.   The application domains of Informatics Research at Massey University include, but are not limited to: Healthcare, Human Physiology and Sports and Exercise, Psychology, Food and Nutrition Sciences, Law and Agriculture.  The group may investigate theoretical research problems in Computer Science, Information Technology and Software Engineering, however such work will be directly related to and inspired  by the practical application domain problems whose solutions may be commercialisable.

Research in Knowledge Engineering within the HIKER Group focuses on investigating formal ways of representing knowledge that is normally published as natural language documents such as scientific research publications, guidelines and protocols, laws and regulations, and standards with the aim of incorporating this knowledge in computational paradigms and formalisms for solving specific problems in the application domains mentioned above.

Research in Computer Security and Privacy and the Cloud within the HIKER Group focuses on investigating new security and privacy approaches, paradigms, metaphors and mechanisms for personal and sensitive information, particularly the electronic healthcare records (EHR), within the context of an increasingly connected world within environments such as mobile computing, the Internet of Things and Cloud Computing. Projects include new security and privacy protection methods based on graph theory applications within the Cloud context and mechanisms for supporting domain-specific security and privacy metaphors.

Research in the emerging domain of the Internet of Things (IoT) combined with the Cloud (Cloud IoT) focuses on security and privacy and on new applications of IoT to the domains of Agriculture and Healthcare. Projects investigate new methods of Cloud IoT-based plant and animal care and securing privacy of health information in the context of Mobile Computing that uses Cloud IoT.

The HIKER Group is also a member of the international research collaboratory that includes the Mitre Corporation. The research collaboratory’s work is focusing on modelling, formal representation and computerisation of Clinical Practice Guidelines in the form of the CareMap and on investigating the problem of generating the realistic synthetic Electronic Healthcare Record for certain kinds of secondary uses.

The HIKER Group welcomes students, researchers, industry practitioners and domain experts as members. The Group values both local and international research collaboration involving both researchers and domain experts. To join the HIKER Group from any where in the world contact Kuda Dube (Massey University) or Tom Gallagher (University of Montana) or Scott McLachlan (Queen Mary University of London, UK).
